How to Change Your PHP Version in cPanel

Keeping up to date with the latest version of PHP will help keep your site secure and stable, which allows you to take advantage of the newer features of PHP 7+. Assuming of course your software supports newer versions of PHP. Inside of cPanel you have the ability to change the PHP version on your domain(s).

Note: If you are running an outdated version of PHP (e.g., 5.x) and are updating to PHP 7.x you need to make sure your website's theme, plugins/extensions, and code base have been updated to support newer versions of PHP. If they do not support newer versions of PHP your site may go offline. If this happens when you change the PHP version to a newer version you will need to downgrade the version back to the outdated version and make sure to have your webmaster/developer or reach out to your theme and plugin/extension developer(s) to update their products.

Follow these steps to change the PHP version for one of your domains:

  • Log into cPanel with the login credentials sent to you in your welcome email
  • Search for MultiPHP Manager in cPanel under the Software heading
  • Select the domain you want to change the PHP version for
  • From the PHP Version drop down select the version of PHP
  • Click the blue Apply button

After clicking Apply wait about 30 seconds before accessing your site. The server needs some time to apply the change. Your site may go down briefly. If it does not come back online you will need to downgrade the PHP version as explained above.
