How to Setup a WordPress Multisite Network

WordPress has a built in feature called Multisite, often referred to as WordPress Multisite. By default, the Multisite feature is disabled.

The Multisite feature allows to act as the Administrator using a single WordPress dashboard. A few things to note regarding a WordPress Multisite setup:
  • Sites share core WordPress files with separate directories for media uploads.
  • Share same database with separate tables in the database.
  • Not all plugins work well with Multisite setups.

You will also want to consider whether or not you want to use Subdomains or Sub-Directories with your Multisite setup. If you are unsure, please review the related article above for more information regarding your options.

Note: If you are debating whether or not to use a Multisite network to manage multiple clients, we highly recommend against using a Multisite network setup.

  • Multisite support is not provided by PeoplesHost.
  • If functionality is broken with your Multisite setup, you will need to hire a developer.
  • If you are unsure whether or not a Multisite setup is right for you, it is much safer to stick with a regular install and setup of WordPress for all of your sites or to use a multiple site management solution such as MainWP.

To manage multiple clients with separate WordPress installations for their sites, you will be better off using a WordPress manager plugin such as MainWP or site management platform such as InfiniteWP or ManageWP. Since a Multisite network shares core files and databases with the same sites in the Multisite network, it makes it very difficult to migrate a website off your Multisite network (e.g., if one of your clients wants to move their site somewhere else).

Multisite Networks are great for managing more than one personal sites or a site with various language translations on separate domains.
