When should I transfer my domain after switching hosts?

The domain transfer should be the very last step in the migration process.

Remember: If you have registered or transferred your domain within the last 60 days you will need to wait until 60 days has past from the initial date of registration or previous transfer to be able to transfer your domain elsewhere. These are policies set by ICANN, the governing body behind all domain registrations and transfers.

It’s best to wait until the free website migration has been completed and the nameservers have been updated before you start a domain transfer. This is because a domains nameservers cannot be updated while a domain is currently in the process of a transfer. Also, you’ll want to make sure the website, email, and everything is working before you commit to transferring your domain. Here’s a brief outline on the process we take to perform a successful migration for our customers. Please note that the process may vary slightly depending on the type of website you have (i.e. eCommerce, static, dynamic websites).

1) Sign up for replacement account at PeoplesHost.
2) Free account migration handled by our Team (usually completed within a few hours).
3) Domain(s) nameservers get updated so that the domain points to your new PeoplesHost account. (wait 12-24 hours for DNS propagation).
4) Fully test website, email, all functions of website (12-24 hours).
5) Unlock domain, disable private registration at old host or domain registrar, obtain the EPP code and submit domain transfer at PeoplesHost.

Domain transfers can take anywhere from a few hours to 7 days depending on the losing registrar. You’ll also receive an email from us (info@transfer-approval.com) requesting that you approve/deny the transfer. You’ll need to approve the domain transfer BEFORE we can process the domain transfer with the loosing registrar and our system will contact you automatically in the event of a problem with your domain transfer.
