Common types of SSL certificates

While there are many different types of SSL certificates, we'll cover the main three PAID certificates and their uses in this article.

The most common and least expensive is the DV (domain validated) SSL certificate. A domain-validated certificate is for general use and effective for low to medium traffic websites. They often cost much less than some other SSL products because they can be issued automatically within minutes. A typical DV certificate will cover either your main domain (including www), or a single sub-domain.

If you have a need to protect multiple sub-domains under a single domain name, the most cost-effective option would be a Wildcard SSL. A wildcard covers any sub-domain (including www) on your primary domain. This can be helpful if you need to secure 3 or more sub-domains. While the cost is more, you can save some money by going this route rather than buying several single DV certificates.

Finally, if you have a high traffic e-Commerce type of website most users opt for the EV (extended validation) otherwise know as a high assurance green certificates. These certificates require manual validation of your company and can take a week or more before issuance. With that, you can expect that the cost of these certificates is much higher. An example of how each EV certificate looks in the different browser windows is shown below.
