SSH (Secure Shell) access allows you to securely manage your website's files and perform various administrative tasks via the command line. Follow these steps to enable and use SSH access in cPanel.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Enabling SSH Access
-
Contact Support:
- Before you can use SSH, you need to have SSH access enabled on your account. Please contact support and request SSH access for your account.
-
Generate a Public/Private Keypair:
- You will need to generate a public/private keypair using your favorite SSH client. This process may vary depending on the client you use. Ensure you keep your private key secure and only share your public key.

Connecting to Your Server via SSH
-
Open your SSH client:
- Use your preferred SSH client (e.g., PuTTY, OpenSSH) to connect to your server.
-
Enter the connection details:
- Hostname: Your domain name or server IP address.
- Port: 8022 (instead of the default port 22).
- Username: Your cPanel username.
- Authentication: Use your private key for authentication.
-
Connect to the server:
- Initiate the connection using the above details.
- If prompted, enter the passphrase for your private key.
Additional Information:
- Security: Using SSH keys is more secure than password-based authentication. Always keep your private key secure.
- Port Number: Remember that SSH at PeoplesHost uses port 8022. Ensure your SSH client is configured to connect to this port.
Troubleshooting:
- Connection Issues: If you cannot connect, verify that SSH access is enabled for your account and that you are using the correct port (8022).
- Key Issues: Ensure your public key is correctly imported and authorized in cPanel.
If you have any issues enabling or using SSH access, please don't hesitate to contact our support department for help or refer to the official cPanel documentation.
NOTE: For security reasons, password authentication has been disabled on our Linux servers. This includes all Linux Shared, VPS, and Dedicated Linux hosting products. Additionally, SSH access on port 22 has been disabled on our servers. You’ll need to connect to SSH on port 8022 for SSH access.
