How to Add a New User in WordPress

You may want to add new users to your WordPress site for a multitude of reasons. You may need to grant administrative access to a developer or designer working on your site or a new user for an editor, author, or contributor to your site. By default, WordPress will install and set up with an admin user by default.

There are five pre-defined roles you can assign to new users:

  • Administrator (slug: 'administrator') – somebody who has access to all the administration features within a single site.
  • Editor (slug: 'editor') – somebody who can publish and manage posts including the posts of other users.
  • Author (slug: 'author') – somebody who can publish and manage their own posts.
  • Contributor (slug: 'contributor') – somebody who can write and manage their own posts but cannot publish them.
  • Subscriber (slug: 'subscriber') – somebody who can only manage their profile.
