You will need an FTP client to connect to your server at PeoplesHost via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). We recommend FileZilla since it's a free, widely used Open Source FTP client and can be downloaded here -- https://filezilla-project.org/.
If you attempt to connect via FTP while on a work network, your workplace's firewall may block you. You may see the following errors in your output log (see below). We highly recommend trying to connect while on your home network. Alternatively, you can log into cPanel and use File Manager to manage your site's files.
You may receive output in FileZilla that looks like the following:
Status: Connection attempt failed with "EAI_FAIL - Nonrecoverable failure in name resolution."
Error: Could not connect to the server

The welcome email we sent you after completing your order at PeoplesHost will contain your FTP account details, hostname, username, and password. You will need this information to continue to follow this tutorial.
If you do not have your welcome email or forgot your information, you can retrieve that email in our secure client area - https://my.peopleshost.com/clientarea.php?action=emails. It will have the word Welcome! in the message subject:
NOTICE: DO NOT use FileZilla's Quickconnect feature. We have found that users often cannot connect via FTP using the Quickconnect feature. This is a known and common issue with FileZilla. Instead, use the Site Manager to manage your website's FTP accounts, as shown below.
Connect Using Site Manager
Adding a New Site to your Site Manager in FileZilla will save your FTP account details, so you don't have to enter that information the next time you open FileZilla to connect. It protects that information in your Site Manager's Entry list so you can choose a website from that Entry list and click within seconds. To add a New Site to FileZilla, you'll want to:
- Open FileZilla
- Click File > Site Manager or CTRL + S
The Site Manager will open on the General tab. On the General account, you will enter the following information (see below).
Note: Your Host (server's hostname) may differ from ph100.peopleshostshared.com. Please check your Welcome email for your server's hostname.
If you forgot to save the Welcome email we sent you after signing up, please refer to this article on how to check your past email notifications directly inside your billing dashboard - https://my.peopleshost.com/index.php?rp=/knowledgebase/24/Viewing-Email-History-in-your-Billing-Control-Panel.html.
Host: SERVER.peopleshostshared.com (yours may be different. Be sure to check your Welcome email)
Port: Leave blank or use 21 (if left empty, this uses port 21 by default)
Protocol: FTP - File Transfer Protocol
Encryption: Use explicit FTP over TLS if available or Require explicit FTP over TLS
Logon Type: Normal
User: Your username
Password: Your password
Please Note: By default, we set you up with a username/password sent to you in your Welcome email. This username is the main FTP account for your hosting account. The screenshot above shows that the User is peopleshost, and nothing follows the username since it's the main FTP account. However, if you are connecting to an FTP account you added through cPanel, you'll want to use the full username, i.e., username@yourdomain.com.
After you have entered this information, you can click the Connect button at the bottom of the screen. You should now be able to connect to your site via FTP successfully. If you receive another pop-up for Unknown Certificate after clicking the Connect button, you'll want to click the box for Always trust certificate in future sessions and then the OK button.
You should see the following in FileZilla once you have connected successfully:
Status: Resolving address of ph100.peopleshostshared.com
Status: Connecting to 66.103.159.5:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Status: Initializing TLS...
Status: Verifying Certificate...
Status: TLS connection established.
Status: Logged in
Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Status: Directory listing of "/" successful
Be careful once you are connected. The files you see on the left are local files on your computer, while those on the right are directories in your hosting account. Moving, deleting, or creating new files or directories may cause issues. If you are unsure about anything, please ask before making any changes.
If you encounter any issues FTP'ing into your account, please contact us, and we'll be happy to assist you further.
